Here’s Why Nvidia Stock Is Down Today

2 min read

Nvidia shares took a dip on Monday, sliding roughly 2.5 percent and wiping out about 130 billion dollars in market capitalization. This sudden cooldown follows a strong run where the stock had rallied over five percent in just five trading days. The decline came on the heels of a report from the Financial Times suggesting that the artificial intelligence giant is collaborating with several of Wall Street’s most influential firms to assemble a massive 500 billion dollar AI infrastructure funding package.

The proposed partnership involves heavy hitters including Blackstone, BlackRock, Apollo Global, and Goldman Sachs, among others. While these types of arrangements often boost Nvidia’s own chip sales by helping partners secure the debt needed for expensive hardware upgrades, they have sparked anxiety among investors regarding concentration risk. Some analysts suggest that the current intensity of investment in AI across tech and utility sectors bears an uncomfortable resemblance to the speculative atmosphere of 1999, raising questions about whether the industry is becoming too centralized.

This shift in market value also led to a change in the global wealth rankings. As Nvidia tumbled and Oracle saw a positive day of trading, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison managed to leapfrog Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang as the seventh wealthiest person in the world. Ellison’s estimated net worth climbed to 192 billion dollars, while Huang’s dipped slightly below that mark to approximately 188.6 billion dollars.

Despite today’s volatility, Nvidia remains a dominant force in the sector, having posted staggering revenue growth earlier this year driven by relentless demand for AI chips. Investors are now looking ahead to August 26 when the company reports its second quarter earnings. That announcement will likely serve as a critical litmus test to determine if actual demand continues to justify the aggressive expansion of AI infrastructure currently being spearheaded by Nvidia and its peers.
